Anthony Cabassa is one of the few who actually shows up. In a world where most people scroll past what's happening, he's been covering local and national issues out of Los Angeles since 2017 — not from behind a desk, but on the ground, at rallies and community meetings, having the conversations most people never hear and documenting them in real time.

He's a Coast Guard veteran and the son of an immigrant, and it shows in how he works. His reporting isn't built on headlines — it's built on what he's actually seen, where he's been, and what he believes needs to be documented. The work reads as political, but underneath it, it's really about perspective: the value in someone willing to stand in something, physically, mentally, publicly, whether or not you agree with him. Not posting, not reacting — showing up. That's the difference between noise and signal, and it's not polished or perfect, just real, which in a landscape built on filters and reactions is exactly what makes it stand out.

I met him at one of those rallies. I was out there myself during the COVID years, pushing back on rights-infringement policies through my own union, and watching what it took for someone like him to show up like that, day after day, made helping feel like the least I could do. He never asked — I just wanted to. It turned out our kids were in the same class, and we'd been living down the street from each other the whole time.

So maybe the question isn't really about him. It's about the rest of us — whether we're paying attention, or just watching from a distance.
